Located on Jeju Island, Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall that flows out of the ceiling of a cave. The first two tiers are 22 metres and 30 metres in height respectively, with the waterfall eventually flowing out into the ocean. Cheonjeyeon translates to “Pond of the Emperor of Heaven”, and is known in Korean legends as a place for spotting nymphs bathing at night.
Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls was designated a Natural Monument in 1993, thanks to the rare plants found throughout its surrounding temperate forest. These include rare species, such as solipnan plants or skeleton fork ferns, which can be seen growing out of crevices in the rocks.
Around the Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls you’ll find a variety of inviting attractions, including the Pacific Land theme park and Jungmun Tourist Complex. The latter features a range of sun-drenched pools dotted with trees. You can also visit the nearby Chocolate Land museum and Heritage-listed Hallasan National Park.
Getting there
The Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls is best reached by catching a plane to Jeju International Airport and getting the Airport Limousine Bus 600 to Yeomiji Botanical Garden. From there, you can walk to the falls in about 10 minutes.
