Known as the home of Australian motorsport, Bathurst is a city that loves racing, gold mining and preserving its heritage in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. Visitors can pan for gold and explore cultural villages, museums, waterfalls, limestone caves and a charming city centre.
The central square in Bathurst showcases Victorian buildings and throwbacks to its gold mining history in the 1800s. Visit History Hill Museum to view over 10,000 artefacts from the gold fields and check out the Australian Fossil & Mineral Museum to see the Somerville Collection of rare minerals, fossils, amethysts, rubies and diamonds. It also houses an intact Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton.
Head over to Bathurst Goldfields and roam through a recreated gold mining village with a mine, steam engines, blacksmith forge and miner’s hut. Check out old mining tools and other artefacts in the two on-site museums. Architecture buffs will also enjoy visiting Abercrombie House, a 50-room Scottish baronial mansion.
The proverbial “need for speed” isn’t just a platitude in Bathurst, which is home to the Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit, a public road that transforms into a high-speed racing course during the Bathurst 1000. Check out the National Motor Racing Museum for racing exhibits and memorabilia, such as racing cars, trophies and posters.
Take a one-hour drive from Bathurst to explore the Abercrombie Caves, part of the Abercrombie Karst Conservation Reserve. These limestone caves include one of biggest natural tunnels in the world. You can pan for gold, go fossicking in the creek and walk to Grove Creek Falls.

Bathurst is a small city, and a lot of the main bars and restaurants are located in the city centre, close to the Fossil and Mineral Museum. We recommend that you stay at the George Hotel, as it is close to a lot of restaurants offering plenty of variety for cuisine. There are Irish bars that serve food, Vietnamese restaurants and American-style diners, as well as pizzerias in the nearby area. The Knickerbocker Hotel is another good option for Bathurst hotels, as it is close to some of the most popular bars, such as the Oxford Hotel and The Victoria Bathurst, where you can have some food then head out for the night.
There are a lot of really cool things to do in Bathurst, and a few of them are a little bit outside the city. Bald Hill Tourist Mine is a great spot to take your children, as they can learn all about the gold rush that made the area famous. They can even take part in panning for gold, getting to learn while spending time in the great outdoors. We recommend staying at the Bathurst Heritage Motor Inn, as it is located to the north of the city, close to the Bald Hill area. You may also want to go to Chifley Dam, to the south of the city, where you can take part in watersports and fishing in the dam that provides the city with its water. We recommend staying at the Hallows Accommodation, as it’s in the south of the city and one of the highest recommended hotels in Bathurst.
The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum is located in the heart of the city, and we recommend that you stay in the Littomore Hotels and Suites, as they are located beside the showground and an easy walk from the museum. The museum is famous for housing the Somerville collection, which includes a T-Rex skeleton and raptor eggs. If you stay at the Country Lodge Motor Inn and fancy a relaxing afternoon, you could book a massage at Macquarie Natural Therapies, just around the corner. Another great way to spend the day is bird spotting and kangaroo watching in the Kangaroo Reserve, at Boundary Road. Holmhurst Guesthouse is nearby and offers easy access to the wonderful area where you can watch families of kangaroos in their daily life and natural habitat.
