Nestled on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Woodhall Spa is a historic village that was home to the RAF 617 Squadron during World War II. Its spring was discovered accidentally by a coal prospector in 1811 and Thomas Hotchkin erected the village’s famous spa baths in the 1830s.
For a dose of local history, head to the Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum, which occupies the 19th-century home of John and Mary Wield. It is a rare example of a corrugated iron building from the period and houses an impressive collection of photographs taken by John Wield.
Golfers can hit the fairways of the Woodhall Spa Golf Club, which was founded in 1891. It boasts two courses, “The Bracken” and “The Hotchkin”, with the latter considered one of the top golf courses in the world. Extending alongside is the Spa Trail, a sculpture-dotted route that connects Woodhall Spa with Horncastle.
Getting there
Woodhall Spa is around 30 minutes’ drive from Lincoln and just over an hour from Nottingham. Birmingham Airport is two hours away and has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular buses connect to Woodhall Spa and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
