About Wolfratshausen

Located at the junction of the Isar and Loisach rivers, Wolfratshausen lies near the shores of the Starnberger See in Bavaria’s south. Holy Roman Emperor Otto II built a castle here in the 10th century, with its lightning-struck ruins later used to build the Munich Residenz.

Things to do in Wolfratshausen

Delve into the past at the Museum Wolfratshausen, which details the settlement’s role as an important market town during the Middle Ages. In addition to centuries-old artefacts, paintings and engravings, the museum features rare musical instruments and a model of the old castle. Highlights of the museum include a recreated shoemaker’s shop and a vintage grocery store.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to the Freizeitpark Märchenwald im Isartal, a fairytale-like forest filled with family-friendly rides and attractions. They can let loose on the imaginative play equipment, ride the gentle rollercoaster or enjoy a leisurely journey on the miniature train. When it’s time to eat, you can grab snacks at the on-site kiosk or relax with a drink in the beer garden.

For a day on the water, head to the Starnberger See, which is one of Germany’s largest bodies of freshwater. It has been nicknamed “Munich’s summer swimming pool” and is ringed by a 46-kilometre-long hiking and cycling trail. In the warmer months, you can explore the lake by boat or dine at one of the cafes and restaurants lining the shore. Dominating the western shore is the turreted 16th-century castle of Schloss Possenhofen.
