Where to stay in Ullensvang

About Ullensvang

Named after an old farm where the Ullensvang Church now stands, Ullensvang hugs the shores of the Hardangerfjord just east of Bergen. It encompasses the charming villages of Odda, Kinsarvik and Lofthus while serving as a gateway to Hardangervidda National Park and the spectacular waterfalls of Husedalen.

Things to do

You can soak up Ullensvang’s magnificent fjord scenery along the National Tourist Route Hardanger, which is particularly stunning in May when the fruit trees lining the route are in full bloom. Admire the Steinsdalsfossen waterfall and visit the Hardanger Maritime Museum at Norheimsund before visiting the Norwegian Museum of Hydro Power and Industry in Tyssedal.

Sprawling across Europe’s largest mountain plateau, Hardangervidda National Park is an outdoor lover’s paradise, with everything from hiking to horseback riding and canoeing on offer. See the huge reindeer herds that migrate across the plateau throughout the year and hike to some of the nomadic stone age settlements that have been uncovered in the area.

Ullensvang can also be used as a base for visiting the waterfalls of Husedalen, which descend the Hardanger Plateau along the Kinso River. Embark on the five-hour hike that takes in the spectacular cascades of Tveitafossen and Nykkjesøyfossen, as well as the 115-metre-high Nyastølsfossen and 246-metre-high Søtefossen. Also nearby is Folgefonna National Park, which encompasses three glaciers, sparkling lakes and a healthy population of ptarmigans.

Getting there

Ullensvang is around 2.5 hours’ drive from Bergen and Bergen Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect towns and villages across the region, all of which are small enough to explore on foot. Having your own vehicle is the best way to explore Ullensvang at your leisure.
