About Hedmark

Hedmark combines centuries of history and culture with spectacular Norwegian landscapes. Visit an open-air folklore museum, explore the ruins of a medieval cathedral and step aboard a historic paddle steamer. A pair of national parks offer the chance to spot wild reindeer, fish for salmon and climb mountains.

Things to do in Hedmark

Step back in time at Domkirkeodden, an open-air museum dotted with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn about Norwegian folklore and walk around the herb garden filled with medicinal plants and flowers. The medieval cathedral is enclosed in an enormous glass structure designed to conserve the ancient stonework.

The lakeside city of Hamar is a gateway to the Hedmark region. Ride the historic Skibladner paddle steamer from Hamar to Lillehammer and enjoy spectacular views of Mjøsa Lake. The vessel is known as the White Swan of Mjøsa and will dazzle you with its gleaming mahogany woodwork, sparkling chandeliers and plush furniture. Book a return trip or ride the train back to Hamar.

Rondslottet towers more than 2,100 metres high and is one of the tallest mountains in the region. The trail to the summit is challenging, with lots of rocky terrain to navigate. From the summit, you can enjoy far-reaching views over Rondane National Park and the surrounding countryside.

Forollhogna National Park is one of the best places in Norway to spot wild reindeer. The park protects a unique landscape of low-lying mountains, valleys and alpine pastures. Trails wind through the park and link many of the traditional mountain villages. The lakes and rivers are well-stocked with trout and salmon.

Kids and adults alike jump at the chance to ride vintage trains at the Norwegian Railway Museum. Climb aboard the narrow gauge steam train and enjoy a scenic ride through the grounds of the open-air museum. Enjoy the ride and watch steam unfurling from the engine.

Getting around Hedmark
