Established in 1911, Tsinghua University in Beijing is one of China’s most prestigious academic and research institutions. Over 45,000 students are enrolled in the largely scientific programs on the university’s urban campus.
Tsinghua University is well known for its beautiful campus with a mixture of Eastern and Western architecture. Its location was originally the site of the Qing Dynasty royal gardens, and much of this landscaping remains. Protected heritage buildings and sculptural artworks are also part of the Beijing campus.
Located in the northwest corner of Beijing, Tsinghua University is one of the several schools comprising the Chinese capital’s education district. Its nearest public transport stop is the Qinghua East Road West Crossing, which is served by the Beijing subway. A ride from the Forbidden City would take over an hour, while driving would take around 30 minutes.
The founding of Tsinghua University has interesting ties to the United States. After the Boxer Rebellion, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt made arrangements for China to provide scholarships for its students to study in America. This fund turned a one-time royal garden into what is now Tsinghua University.
