About Navia

Navia is a laid-back village surrounded by sandy beaches and shimmering bays. It’s set on the Navia River and is a stone’s throw from the Cantabrian Sea. Sunbathe on gold-sand beaches, explore coastal trails or simply eat tapas, sip sangria and slow down the pace in the lively village centre.

Things to do in Navia

Playa de Navia is set on the river mouth and overlooks the Bay of Biscay. Pine and eucalyptus trees dot the shoreline and offer plenty of shade. Bask on the sand and cool off in the calm, crystalline water. The grassy areas are perfect for beachside picnics.

Lace up your hiking boots and explore Reserva Natural Parcial Barayo. The park protects a patchwork of sandy beaches, rolling dunes and rugged cliffs. Spot birds in the wetland areas and swim at Playa de Barayo, a picturesque beach set on a sheltered bay. Don’t miss the sea caves at the eastern end of the beach.

Enjoy spectacular views on the breezy Senda Costa Naviega footpath. The path stretches along the coast and connects Navia with the tiny fishing port of Puerto de Vega. Hike the entire 17-kilometre path or tackle bite-sized sections. Stop to swim at Playa de Frejulfe, another beautiful beach framed by eucalyptus woodlands.

Seafood is a staple in Asturias and features in classic dishes like “caldereta” fish stew and “salmon a la Riberena” cooked in cider. Enjoy melt-in-your-mouth goat’s milk cheeses and sip fruity reds from the Cangas winemaking region. Finish with traditional desserts like “arroz con leche” rice pudding topped with caramelised sugar and “tarta de manzana” apple pie.

Getting around Navia

Navia is compact and easy to get around on foot. Rental cars offer the freedom to visit Navia and explore the Asturias region at your own pace. The village is a 2.5-hour drive from Leon and 5.5 hours from Madrid.
