Where to stay in Blokhus

About Blokhus

Famed for its white sandy beaches, Blokhus is a former fishing village on Denmark’s North Jutlandic Island that has been transformed into a popular holiday town. It takes its name from the timber-built houses constructed here in the early 17th century and became known locally as “block houses”. The town’s stunning coastal terrain has inspired countless artists, including the renowned landscape painter Axel P. Jensen.

Things to do in Blokhus

After a morning spent relaxing on Blokhus’s dune-backed beaches, visit the largest open-air art gallery in Denmark, Skulpturparken Blokhus. Admire the sculptures constructed from sand, metal and stone that dot the sprawling grounds, then visit the landscaped garden or children’s playground.

Another artistic attraction not to miss is the Museum for Papirkunst, which showcases the diverse use of paper in art. Discover the masterly works of Danish psaligrapher Karen Bit Vejle and marvel at the contemporary origami on display, then get hands-on in the studio and create your own paper art. The museum store sells handicrafts and a large selection of paper products and the on-site cafe serves locally-sourced produce.

Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to Fårup Sommerland, which is the oldest amusement park in Denmark. In addition to its thrilling roller coasters and traditional rides, this forest-dwelling park is home to bouncy castles, a mini-golf course and a giant playground.

Getting around Blokhus

Blokhus is around 30 minutes’ drive from Aalborg and Aalborg Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect from Aalborg to Blokhus and the town is compact enough to explore on foot. Having your own vehicle is best for exploring further afield on North Jutlandic Island.
