Where to stay in Wyk auf Föhr

About Wyk auf Föhr

Wyk auf Fohr captures the charm and laid-back lifestyle of the North Frisian Islands. The tiny town is perched on the southeastern tip of Fohr Island and built around a lively fishing harbour. Stroll along cobbled streets in the town centre and head down to the beach to sunbathe and swim in the Wadden Sea.

Things to do

Soft sand and gently rolling waves make Föhr Südstrand one of the top beaches in the North Frisian Islands. The sand is dotted with colourful wicker shelters known as “strandkorbs” by locals. They’re great for escaping the wind while you bask in the sunshine. Red-brick Olhörn lighthouse towers more than eight metres over the beach and is a local landmark. At low tide, you can walk out onto the mudflats to get up close with sea creatures and collect shells.

Dr. Carl-Häberlin-Friesen-Museum occupies a thatch-roof cottage and charts the unique history, heritage and geology of the island. Exhibits cover a diverse range of topics, from local industries like whaling and fishing to folk costumes and arts and crafts. At the entrance to the museum, you can walk under an enormous arch made from whale bones.

Nearby is the flower-filled Park at the Mill museum. It’s built around a centuries-old wooden windmill and is a beautiful place to stretch your legs and admire one of the town’s most famous historic landmarks.

Scenic boat trips depart from the harbour and take you to a small group of offshore islands known as The Halligen. The low-lying islands regularly flood, and you’ll notice the locals have built their houses on mounds.

Getting around

Wyk auf Fohr is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The town is set on the southeastern tip of Fohr Island and is accessible only by ferry. Bike rentals are a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the island at your own pace.
