Where to stay in Srinagar

About Srinagar

Srinagar is a captivating city in the picturesque Kashmir Valley, set on the banks of shimmering Dal Lake and encircled by mountains. Spend your time strolling around beautiful Mughal gardens, cruising on colourful houseboats and devouring flavoursome Kashmiri cuisine.

Things to do

Srinagar is anchored by an atmospheric Old City crisscrossed with winding alleyways. Don't miss Khanqah Shah-i-Hamadan, a striking mosque that's been welcoming worshippers since the 1700s. The elaborate facade is adorned with multicoloured carvings, panels and glass inlays.

Don’t miss Srinagar's historic Mughal gardens. They're strung along the eastern shores of Dal Lake and are filled with fragrant flowers, lush fruit trees and bubbling fountains. Nishat Bagh is one of the most beautiful, with steep terraced gardens cascading down to the lake.

On a clear day, the glassy waters of Dal Lake reflect the rugged peaks of the Pir Panjal mountains. The best way to enjoy the lake is by relaxing on one of the colourful houseboats. You can also step aboard a "shikara" water taxi and visit local attractions, such as the floating flower market.

Srinagar’s local restaurants, such as Mughal Darbar, serve tantalising Kashmiri fare, including aromatic Rogan Josh, spicy lamb curry and fragrant rice infused with cinnamon, almonds and saffron. Wash it down with a creamy mango lassi.

Getting around

Srinagar is best explored on foot, especially around the Old City and lakefront districts. Taxis and auto-rickshaws offer transport, while "shikara" gondolas traverse the lake. Srinagar Airport is one kilometre out of town and offers regular flights from Delhi and Mumbai.
