About Leh

Framed by soaring peaks, Leh is a gateway to the Indian Himalayas and is one of India's top trekking destinations. The high-altitude city sits at an elevation of 3,500 metres and is dotted with Tibetan palaces, Buddhist stupas and ancient temples.

Things to do in Leh

It's easy to spend hours getting lost in Leh's enchanting Old Town. It sits in the shadow of Leh Palace, an imposing Tibetan-style fort built in the 16th century. The Old Town is criss-crossed with winding alleyways lined with tour agencies, colourful souvenir stalls and lantern-lit restaurants.

The snow-capped mountains and lush valleys of the Indian Himalayas lure in a constant stream of intrepid travellers. One of the most popular trekking routes is Spituk to Stok, a four-day hike showcasing tiny mountain villages, flower-strewn valleys and rugged peaks.

The Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO), offers a glimpse at the region's flourishing cultural scene. It's housed in a pair of beautifully restored 17th-century Ladakhi mansions and hosts a fantastic line-up of rotating exhibitions. You can also request a guided tour of the historic mansions.

Stock up on carrots before visiting Leh's Donkey Sanctuary, which serves as a haven for abandoned and mistreated animals. You can pat the resident donkeys, chat to the volunteers and find out more about the important conservation work the organisation does in Leh.

Getting around Leh

Leh is best explored on foot, especially around the Old Town, while mopeds and motorbikes can be hired. You'll also find plenty of minivan "taxis". Flights arrive at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, three kilometres away.
