About Spring Hill

Popular with young professionals and local families with school-age children, the Spring Hill suburb of Brisbane is primarily a residential area. This, however, does not leave it without its share of attractions for visitors.

As a residential area, Spring Hill is home to many historic houses. The neighbourhood features prominently on the local heritage list. The oldest public baths in Queensland, the Spring Hill Baths are still open and operated by the Brisbane City Council. Even more historic is Wickham Park’s Old Windmill, which dates back to 1824. At the time, Brisbane was still a penal colony. The windmill first milled grain but was later used as the colony’s gallows.

Spring Hill lies 2 kilometres north of Brisbane’s central business district. The nearest train station is Central Station, which lies within walking distance of the neighbourhood’s southern boundary. Fortunately, this area is where attractions like The Old Windmill lie. For the rest of the neighbourhood, it’s best to rely on the city’s bus network.

As one might guess from the hefty heritage list, Spring Hill is one of Brisbane’s oldest residential neighbourhoods. Many houses date to the 19th century. The hill was also the site of Brisbane’s first fresh water supply, hence the name Spring Hill.
