South Beach is one of Miami's most coveted neighbourhoods, fringed by sugar-white sand and sparkling water. Also known as “SoBe”, this glitzy enclave is filled with luxury boutiques, upscale restaurants and handsome Art Deco architecture.
Things to do
The Wolfsonian-FIU celebrates Miami's vibrant design and architecture scene. Inside you'll find exhibitions on the evolution of South Beach's unique aesthetic. The building is suitably impressive, featuring a lavish Mediterranean-Revival facade and elaborately carved sandstone entrance. It's located in the heart of Miami's iconic Art Deco district, which is home to over 800 Heritage-listed buildings.
Stroll or rollerblade along the South Beach Promenade, a breezy waterfront strip lined with swaying palms. It backs onto Lummus Park Beach, a gorgeous stretch of sand dotted with lifeguard stands. You can bask on the beach, relax on the grassy foreshore or cool off in the Atlantic Ocean.
Miami cradles a flourishing art and cultural scene, with the Colony Theatre hosting comedy acts, theatrical dramas and Broadway-style productions. Music lovers can snag tickets to symphony orchestra performances at the New World Centre, a modernist glass-and-steel building designed by Frank Gehry.
From organic cafes to chef-owned restaurants, South Beach boasts some of Florida's best eateries. Yardbird is a local favourite, known for its hearty-meets-high-class Southern comfort food served in a shabby chic space. Wrap up your evening with craft cocktails and Latin music at the legendary Mango's Tropical Café on Ocean Drive.
Getting around
The pedestrian-friendly streets and palm-lined boulevards of South Beach are best explored on foot. You can ride the South Beach Loop trolley service, rent a public bike or zip around on an electric-powered golf cart run by Swoop Miami. Miami International Airport is a 20-minute drive away.
