About Rockhampton CBD

Located on the west bank of the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton CBD lies at the heart of Central Queensland’s most important industrial and agricultural centre. It lies on the traditional lands of the Darumbal people and was first settled by British graziers in the 1850s before evolving into a major hub for the production of beef.

Occupying a contemporary riverfront building is the Rockhampton Museum of Art, which is one of the finest regional art galleries in Australia. It is particularly renowned for its collection of Modernist Australian art, with works by Sidney Nolan, Judy Cassab and Arthur Boyd on display. The museum also houses a significant number of Japanese historical works and mid-20th-century British prints.

Rockhampton’s transport history is showcased at the Archer Park Rail Museum, which occupies a heritage-listed railway station dating back to 1897. Take a step back in time to experience the sights and sounds of the World War II period and admire the beautifully restored trains and rolling stock. A highlight of the collection is a French Purrey steam tram reconstructed using parts from Rockhampton’s early-20th-century tramcars.

For sweeping views of the Fitzroy River, head to Rockhampton’s Riverside Precinct, which encompasses a historic sandstone boulevard and a lushly planted boardwalk dotted with artworks. Kids can enjoy a run around in the children’s playground or cool off amidst the spray jets of Rod Laver Plaza. Spanning the river is the heritage-listed Alexandra Railway Bridge, which dates back to 1898.
