Positioned at the mouth of a steep ravine, Puerto de Mogan is a picturesque resort town on the island of Gran Canaria, home to ancient ruins and a vibrant weekly market. It’s been nicknamed the “Venice of the Canaries” with canals linking its marina and fishing harbour.
Things to do in Puerto de Mogan
Spend an afternoon strolling through the atmospheric streets of Puerto de Mogan that are lined with whitewashed buildings. Dine at one of the restaurants overlooking the marina and shop for locally-crafted goods at the market that takes place each Friday.
To the east of Puerto de Mogan is the Zona Arqueológica de Cañada de Los Gatos, which preserves the remains of a pre-Hispanic settlement. Follow the trail that leads beside its funerary caves and to the Las Crucesitas cemetery to learn about the ancient cultures that once inhabited the Canary Islands.
A short drive from Puerto de Mogan takes you to the Molino Quemado, a Heritage-listed mill set within a garden filled with giant teapots. It’s the only restored windmill remaining on Gran Canaria that’s open to visitors, with a staircase leading to the top where you can take in the garden views.
Want to experience the underwater wonders of the Canary Islands without getting wet? Jump aboard the Yellow Submarine to find large portholes that offer a front row seat for viewing large schools of colourful parrotfish and the 32-metre-long Cermona II wreck that boasts an abundance of marine life.
Getting there
Puerto de Mogan is a one-hour drive from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and 40 minutes from Gran Canaria Airport. Buses connect Puerto de Mogan with towns and villages across the island and it’s compact enough to explore on foot.
