The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki tells the story of Sephardic heritage in the city of Thessaloniki, a safe haven for Jewish people that dates back over 500 years. The museum is housed in the former warehouse of a local Jewish newspaper and offers touching recounts of Jewish culture in Greece.
On the first floor, wander through a moving hall of remembrance lined with Jewish gravestones and photographs recovered from the Great Jewish Necropolis on the eastern side of the city walls. Upstairs you can learn about the rich culture of Sephardic Jews and retrace a narrative of Jewish life in Thessaloniki from the 3rd century BC until the Holocaust.
The second floor features a separate exhibit on the Shoah, the local Jewish community of 49,000 men, women and children who were systematically deported during World War II. Take an audio guide for an in-depth look at these historic events.
The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki is located just off Tsimiski Road on Agiou Mina Street in the center of Thessaloniki. It’s about 20 minutes’ walk from Thessaloniki Railway Station and 10 minutes from Thessaloniki Port. There’s limited parking available at the museum.
Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki is home to many highly-rated hotels, one of which is Hotel Kastoria, which has a current rating of 7.1. For other potential stays, consider Hotel El Greco and City Hotel Thessaloniki, which can also be great places to stay near Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki.
