About Glencoe

Glencoe captures the wild and rugged beauty of the West Highlands. Defined by rocky mountains and rolling moorlands, the region is one of Scotland’s most popular destinations for hiking, hillwalking and cycling.

Set on the banks of Loch Linnhe, Fort William is the biggest town in Glencoe. Spend a few hours strolling around the town centre, then board the historic Jacobite Steam Train and enjoy the scenic two-hour journey to Mallaig. The track crosses the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, featured in the Harry Potter films. The excellent Glencoe Visitor Centre features interactive displays on the unique history, culture and geology of the region. Don’t miss the exhibit on the grisly Massacre of Glencoe in the 17th century.

Ben Nevis towers 1,345 metres high and is the tallest mountain in the United Kingdom. A well-marked trail winds up to the summit, where you can enjoy sweeping views over the countryside. The return hike takes around eight hours. Reward yourself with a hearty meal of haggis, mashed potatoes and turnips at a local pub.

Getting there

Glencoe is a three-hour drive from Edinburgh and two hours from Glasgow. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore Glencoe and the West Highlands at your own pace. Fort William Train Station is a gateway to the region.
