Antonio’s on the Port is a local favourite, offering Italian cuisine a la Australia. There’s also the American Hotel, which specialises in modern-Australian fine dining. Black Pudding is a licensed cafe, where you can enjoy seasonal burgers along with coffee or something stronger, while Johnny & Lyle is a popular meeting place for breakfast or brunch. For something a bit different, try M.V. Mary Ann, a floating restaurant on the river, or the local watering holes are the Star Hotel and the Shamrock Hotel – the latter also offers especially good accommodation in Echuca.

A very quaint attraction that children will love is Sharps Magic Movie House, with its old-fashioned Penny Arcade. Echuca hotels nearby include The Settlement Historic Hotel.

Echuca is a paddle-steamer port on the Murray River and has been since its inception in the 19th century. There’s no better place in town to get acquainted with this history than at the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre. It’s an open-air museum on the Echuca Wharf, containing all manner of artefacts relating to the riverfront industry and the inland railway navigation of Australia. Murray Esplanade has restored port buildings that date back to Echuca’s glory days as one of Victoria’s largest inland ports. And, of course, you can take a trip on a river paddle-steamer yourself, on the PS Canberra, built in 1912. It’s easy to find places to stay near the river, like the Big River Motel.
