Where to stay in Altstadt

About Altstadt

The historic area of the city of Salzburg, Austria is known as Altstadt or “Old Town”. It comprises beautiful Medieval and Baroque architecture and forms part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the banks of Salzach River, Altstadt is home to castles and palaces, museums and Mozart with a charming fairy tale atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Dominating the hillside above Altstadt is Hohensalzburg Castle, one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Visitors can explore the inner courtyard which is home to St. George’s Chapel, Golden Hall and Hohensalzburg Fortress. The complex is easily accessible by funicular from Altstadt, or energetic travellers can stroll leisurely up the hill pausing for photographs along the way. Another major tourist attraction is magnificent Mirabell Palace. The opulent interior of Marble Hall and the sculpted Mirabellgarten are highlights no visitor will want to miss. The garden featured in the acclaimed musical “The Sound of Music”. Several key scenes were filmed around the steps, flower beds and fountains. Classical music connoisseurs will be in their element in Salzburg Altstadt. The city was home to famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His birthplace and museum can be discovered in the Old Town. There are several cafes named after Austria’s favourite song, and music concerts are performed throughout the year. Visitors keen to indulge in retail therapy will find a multitude of shops around Getreidegasse where old fashioned signs dangle from quaint buildings. Venture inside to browse independent shops selling antiquities, folk wear and produce. Alternatively, enjoy coffee and cake in one of the delightful street-side cafes.

The best way to get around Altstadt is on foot as many main attractions are within easy reach of each other. City buses operate throughout the city, while Salzburg is home to over 100 kilometres of cycle paths, and bikes can be hired around the city centre. Those wishing to venture further afield will find the main railway station can transport them to cities and outlying areas in Austria.

Salzburg was named after the barges which used to transport salt along the river from local mines. The name translates as “Salt Fortress”. Altstadt is renowned for its striking architecture and is one of the best-preserved traditional centres in Austria and Germany combined. Visitors arrive in Salzburg to experience its magic, relive their favourite childhood musical and explore medieval architecture.
