Things to do in Viella
Cobbled streets, stone houses and a picturesque setting on the Garonne River give Vielha a postcard-perfect feel. Stroll around the historic centre and stop to admire the traditional Aranese architecture featuring pitched slate roofs and wooden balconies. Saint Michael Church looms over the town and is topped with soaring Gothic spires.
Musèu dera Val D’Aran occupies a beautifully restored Renaissance mansion and charts the rich narrative of the town. Exhibits cover centuries of history, from the Bronze Age to modern times. Highlights include an impressive collection of medieval art and Roman relics.
With some of the tallest peaks more than 2,000 metres high, Vielha is a mecca for hikers. There are trails for every level, from gentle walks to challenging summits. Experienced mountaineers can climb Pico Aneto, one of the tallest peaks in the Pyrenees. For the most dramatic scenery, head to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, where you can discover glacier-carved valleys, tumbling waterfalls and more than 200 alpine lakes.
From rustic taverns to fine-dining establishments, Vielha is filled with atmospheric restaurants where you can enjoy Catalan cuisine. Getting around Viella
Vielha is compact and easy to get around on foot. The town is a four-hour drive from Barcelona and 2.5 hours from Andorra la Vella. Local buses connect Vielha with nearby towns and cities, while rental cars offer the freedom to explore the Arán Valley at your own pace.
