Things to do in Al Madinah
Raised by the Islamic prophet Muhammad, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi Mosque is one of the holiest Islamic sites in the world. The two-tiered mosque is topped by graceful domes, soaring minarets and a cavernous Ottoman prayer hall. Sitting on the outskirts of Medina, Quba Mosque is another iconic place of worship, built in the first year of the Islamic calendar.
Located just outside the city, Mada'in Saleh is one of Saudi Arabia's most fascinating archaeological sites. The ruins date back to the ancient Nabatean kingdom. It's the kingdom's second-largest settlement, dotted with monumental tombs carved into rocks.
Are you craving sunshine and sand? Head to Yanbu, a laid-back coastal city dotted with luxury resorts. You can soak up the sun on the sandy beaches of Sharm Yanbu Bay, dive at offshore reefs and stroll along the breezy waterfront corniche.
For a glimpse at Al Madinah's unique geography, don't miss exploring Mount Uhud. It's over 1,000 metres tall and famous as the site of the Battle of Uhud, a major clash between Muslim and Meccan forces in AD 624. Today you can visit the hidden cave where the Prophet took refuge after being wounded in action.
Getting around Al Madinah
The easiest way to explore Al Madinah Province is by car, while the city of Medina is also well-serviced by local buses and taxis. Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International is the province's main airport, located 30 minutes from the Medina city centre.
