About Zhangjiajie

An alluring destination in China’s Hunan province, Zhangjiajie is famous for its soaring peaks, tranquil streams, dense forests and massive karst caves. The sub-tropical scenery in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park inspired the landscapes for the movie “Avatar”, which is highlighted by cave explorations, scenic boat rides and a glass-bottom bridge.

To see Zhangjiajie’s famous pillar-like formations that inspired “Avatar”, visit the UNESCO-listed Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The views here are mesmerising, particularly at sunrise, and a day of hiking reveals a picturesque landscape dotted with gorges, ravines, waterfalls and streams.

Go underground on a guided tour of Yellow Dragon Cave. With a height of 140 meters and length of 7.6 kilometres, this massive cave features two underground rivers, four waterfalls, 13 caverns and over 10,000 stalagmites and stalactites.

Looking for an adrenalin-pumping activity? Test your fear of heights at the Grand Canyon of Zhangjiajie, the longest and highest glass bridge in the world at 400 metres high. Tianmen Mountain National Park is another spot for thrill seekers, home to a 100-metre-long Glass Skywalk that wraps around a cliff.

For a dose of culture, climb to the top of the 500-year-old Zhangjiajie Zixia Temple to admire its ancient architecture and mountain views. You can get a glimpse of folk culture at Tujia Folk Customs Park by catching a live performance of the Maogusu Dance in the village square, then sampling local delicacies like sour fish and stewed chicken.
