About Zealand

Ringed by beautifully preserved towns, beachside villages and a colourful capital, Zealand is the largest island in Denmark. According to Norse mythology, it was created by the goddess, Gefjun, who tricked the king of Sweden, Gylfi, by transporting the land that would become Zealand to Denmark.

Things to do in Zealand

Whether you want to delve into the history of Scandinavian design in Copenhagen or explore the enchanting streets of Køge, Zealand offers the perfect introduction to Denmark.

Sightsee in Copenhagen. Serving as the Danish capital, Copenhagen is renowned for its colourful buildings and 18th-century Rococo district, home to the royal palace of Amalienborg. Wander through the gardens of Rosenborg Castle and delve into the local history at the National Museum before admiring the Scandinavian furnishings on display at the Design Museum.

Follow in Shakespeare’s footsteps in Helsingør. Overlooking Øresund, this vibrant port city is famed as the location of Kronborg Castle, a 15th-century fortification that provided the setting for Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet”. Designed by Bjarke Ingels is the nearby M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, which showcases the country’s seafaring history over the last six centuries.

Experience atmospheric Køge. Clustered with half-timbered buildings, Køge is a historic market town famed for its association with Danish witch trials. See one of the best-preserved medieval town squares in Denmark and journey back to the Viking Age at the Køge Museum. Historically accurate models of the town in the 19th century are exhibited at the Køge Miniby.

Visit the cathedral city of Roskilde. Centred around a twin-spired cathedral, Roskilde is the resting place of nearly 40 Danish kings and queens. Authentic Viking long boats dating from the 11th century are exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum while the bright yellow Museum of Contemporary Art showcases local masters.
