About Whitefield

Forming part of New Hampshire’s White Mountains Region, Whitefield is a charming town that dates back to 1774. It became a popular tourist destination in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway when city dwellers from Boston, New York and Philadelphia sought to escape and enjoy its cool mountain air.

Things to do in Whitefield

A short drive north of Whitefield is the David Dana Forest, a scenic tract of spruce firs surrounded by wildlife-filled meadows. It encompasses the site of a historic gold mine that can be accessed along a short hiking trail and offers sweeping views across the area. An old railroad bed leads to Johns River, which is a popular spot for luring trout.

On the other side of Whitefield is the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge, which is nestled beneath the mountains of the Presidential Range. It features ponds, wetlands and forests that support an abundance of wildlife species, with the birdwatching particularly impressive. Traversing the refuge is the Pondicherry Rail Trail, which follows the former route of the Maine Central Railroad.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, coincide your visit with a performance at the Weathervane Theatre, which presents both classic plays and modern musicals throughout the season. Founded in 1966, the theatre occupies two conjoined barns that have been transformed into a modern performance venue. Nearby are the 9 holes of the Mountain View Grand Golf Course, which has been open to players since 1908.
