Perched at the northern end of Lake Müritz, Waren is a historic town and health resort lying part way between Rostock and Berlin. Its existence was recorded as early as 150 AD, although it really flourished as a medieval trade route between Stargard Land and Wismar.
Stroll through the heart of Waren to admire its timber-framed buildings and New Town Hall, a 19th-century landmark designed in a Tudor-Gothic style. Waren was established around St. George’s Church (which still dominates the Alter Markt today) while St. Mary’s Church is topped by a striking tower that dates back to the early 14th century. A highlight of the town is its lakefront harbour, which is lined with beautiful old warehouses.
Waren serves as a gateway for exploring Müritz National Park, a spectacular landscape of sparkling lakes, emerald forests and bird-filled wetlands. You can cruise the waters of Lake Müritz or stretch your legs along the network of hiking trails while keeping your eyes peeled for red deer, ospreys and white-tailed eagles.
Serving as a visitor centre for Müritz National Park is the Müritzeum, an impressive building that appears as though it is floating on the lake. It features interactive exhibitions about the local ecology and regional culture and boasts the largest freshwater aquarium for native species in Germany. Get up close to rare crustaceans, turtles and dozens of fish species, then let the kids run loose in the adventure playground.
Waren is just over an hour’s drive from Rostock and two hours from Berlin while Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt is 2.5 hours away. Regular trains connect to the Waren railway station and buses travel throughout the town. The centre of Waren is compact enough to explore on foot.
Waren is home to many highly-rated hotels, one of which is Maremüritz Yachthafen Resort, which has a current rating of 8.2. For other potential stays, consider Spa Hotel Amsee and Müritzpalais, which can also be great places to stay in Waren.
