About Volda

Volda is a picturesque village set on the shores of a fjord. Grass-covered meadows stretch down to the water’s edge, giving Volda a fairy-tale feel. Relax in the town centre, hike in the surrounding mountains and day trip to other charming villages in the Sunnmøre region.

Things to do

Volda is perched on the northeastern banks of Voldsfjorden, one of the most beautiful fjords in the Sunnmøre region. The village is set on the water and offers fantastic views of the forested mountains and snow-capped peaks that surround the fjord.

Volda Church was built in the 1930s by iconic Norwegian architect Arnstein Arneberg. It’s a local landmark and features a handsome stone façade and impressive tower. The church is set in a grass-covered graveyard overlooking the fjord.

The village is dotted with cosy restaurants and taverns where you can enjoy traditional Norwegian food, including trout caught in Voldsfjorden. Wash down your meal with a glass of “aquavit” liquor flavoured with caraway and other spices.

Rotsethornet peak towers over the town centre and boasts some of the best views in the Sunnmøre region. A hiking trail winds up to the 650-metre-high summit, where you’ll get panoramic views over the surrounding mountains, villages and fjords.

Comfortable hotels, excellent restaurants and friendly locals make Volda a great base for exploring the Sunnmøre region. The nearby village of Dravlaus is worth a visit, with attractions including a historic church and a fascinating local history museum. Fyrde will charm you with its traditional wooden buildings and a picturesque waterfront setting.

Getting around

Volda is compact and easy to get around on foot. The village is a 1.5-hour drive from Alesund and six hours from Bergen while Ørsta–Volda Airport is a 10-minute drive away. Ferries run between Volda and other villages located along Voldsfjorden, including Lauvstad and Folkestad.
