About Velbert

Renowned for its production of locks and security fittings, Velbert is nestled in the hills of Niederberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its rich history dates back to the 9th century when it was known as “Feldbrathi”. Today, Velbert serves as a gateway for exploring the half-timbered towns of Langenberg and Neviges.

Things to do in Velbert

Velbert is home to the world’s only museum dedicated exclusively to locks, the Deutsches Schloss- Und Beschlägemuseum, which explores 4,000 years of security technology. Learn about the locks that were used during Roman times and discover how industrialisation transformed the industry. In addition to antique locks, the museum also showcases the latest in biometric access control and the future of security systems.

A short drive south-east of Velbert is the Nevigeser Wallfahrtsdom, a Brutalist-style concrete church designed by Gottfried Böhm in 1966. It has served as a pilgrimage site since 1676, when a Franciscan monastery was erected following a Marian apparition. Marvel at the abstract lines of the church’s exterior before stepping into its monumental hall, which can accommodate up to 6,000 worshippers.

You can coincide your visit to the Nevigeser Wallfahrtsdom with a stop at the Vorburg Schloss Hardenberg, a centuries-old castle first documented in 1354. It is framed by a horseshoe-shaped outer bailey that once housed stables and now regularly hosts cultural events. If you’re travelling with kids, don’t miss Herminghaus Park with its adventure playground, nature trail and a small zoo.

Getting around Velbert

Velbert is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Düsseldorf and Düsseldorf Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Trains connect to the Velbert am Berg railway station and buses travel through the town. Renting a car is the most convenient way of exploring the area.
