Where to stay in Towada

About Towada

Surrounded by the magnificent Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Towada is a small city in the foothills of the Hakkoda Mountains. This global hub for artists is renowned for its immense caldera lake and picturesque autumn colours.

Things to do

Jump aboard a sightseeing boat to explore the largest caldera lake on Honshu, Lake Towada, or take in the panoramic views from its observation decks while touring the perimeter by car. Stop at the Towada Shrine and photograph the famous statue depicting Tohoku women, then wander along the Oirase Stream on the lake’s eastern shore, famed for its autumn foliage.

To the north of Lake Towada is the volcanic peaks of Mount Hakkoda that ignite in colour during the autumn months and are blanketed in snow during winter. Ride the Hakkoda Ropeway to the top of Tamoyachidake peak, follow one of the many hiking trails along its slopes or bathe in the sulphuric hot springs of the Sukayu Onsen.

Nestled at the northern base of Mount Hakkoda is the Tashirotai Marshland, a former caldera lake that’s now home to a variety of swamp vegetation. Wander along the wooden boardwalks surrounded by day lilies, azaleas and bog rosemary.

Admire the work of emerging global artists at the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre where intensive residency programs are held. Follow the walking paths through forested grounds dotted with art installations or peruse one of the temporary exhibitions in the on-site gallery.

Getting around

Towada is around 1.5 hour’s drive from Aomori Airport and central Aomori. Buses access most of Towada’s sights, but having your own vehicle will give you greater flexibility.
