Where to stay in Tiberias

About Tiberias

One of Judaism's four holy cities, Tiberias lures in a constant stream of Jewish and Christian pilgrims. The city sits on the western shores of the Sea of Galilee, a sparkling freshwater lake where Jesus is said to have begun his ministry. Spend your time visiting sacred tombs, peering into Crusader churches or soaking up the sun on the beach.

Things to do

Located just outside the city centre, the Tomb of Rabbi Meir Ba'al HaNess is the final resting place of one of the greatest Jewish sages of all time. He lived in the 2nd century and is hailed as the "Master of Miracles”. Today you can visit the tomb and pay your respects at the soaring Sephardi synagogue.

The impressive St Peter’s Church was built by Crusaders and is named after one of the apostles of Jesus. Inside you'll find a tranquil courtyard shaded by grapevines. The church ceiling is shaped like a boat in a nod to St Peter’s roots as a Sea of Galilee fisherman. It's also adorned with murals depicting Jesus walking on water.

Hamat Tverya National Park is one of Israel's top natural attractions, coveted for its thermal hot springs that are renowned for their healing properties. You can also visit an ancient 4th-century synagogue decorated with intricate artwork depicting the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

Set on the Sea of Galilee shoreline, the Tiberias Open Air Museum is filled with sculptures and artwork designed by contemporary Israeli artists. If you want to soak up the sun, stroll along the Tiberias Promenade to Music Beach, a small stretch of sand popular with swimmers and sunbathers.

Getting around

Downtown Tiberias is easy to get around on foot, especially if you stick to the waterfront district. Tiberias is also serviced by a network of public buses.
