Stretching to the north of Phuket, Thai Mueang is a stunning coastal district within the province of Phang Nga. It’s home to the wildlife-filled rainforest of Khao Lampi-Hat Thai Mueang National Park and idyllic stretches of sand, as well as photogenic waterfalls, secret swimming holes and beachfront Buddhist temples.
Sprawling across the north of Thai Mueang is Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, which encompasses blissful beaches and a tropical rainforest teeming with wildlife. You can swim in the warm waters of the Andaman Sea or hike to the five-tiered Lam Ru Waterfall while keeping your eyes peeled for Malaysian tapir and Bengal monitors. The park is also a thrilling birdwatching destination, with crested serpent eagles, emerald doves and oriental pied hornbills all recorded here.
Spend a day relaxing on the white sands of Thai Mueang Beach, which stretches for more than 10 kilometres along the coast. Dine on authentic Thai dishes at one of the restaurants backing the beach and visit the Phang Nga Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Centre. In addition to its sea turtle hatchery, it’s also home to giant clams and anemone fish.
A short drive south of Thai Mueang Beach is the Ta Teang Swimming Basin, a stunning inland pool featuring emerald green water. Rent a mask and snorkel to explore the underwater garden before feasting on cashew chicken at the local food stall. Combine your visit with a stop at the nearby Buddhist temple of Wat Tha Sai, which features beautifully carved doors and marble Buddha statues.
Thai Mueang is around an hour’s drive from Phuket International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Buses travel throughout the district while renting a car gives you greater freedom to explore the region.
