The inland township of Teshikaga offers classic Japanese dining and parks while giving you direct access to two tranquil lakes and a range of hot springs. Nature abounds around Teshikaga, including the towering Mount Iō and Mount Mokoto, which are popular among hikers and mountain bikers.
Things to do in Teshikaga
Begin your Teshikaga holiday exploring the centre of town, where you’ll find Suigo Ryokuchi Park, known for its traditional timber structures and decorative pond. Soak your weary muscles at the central Teshikaga Mashu Hot Spring or let the kids run wild on the playground at Yunoshima Park. You’ll find a range of authentic Japanese restaurants within the centre, from sushi joints and sake bars to ramen eateries.
Are you a keen hiker or mountain biker? Tackle one of the nearby mountains, such as Mount Mokoto, where you can walk or ride to the summit in about one hour. The mountain is also covered in snow during winter, turning it into a winter wonderland. Alternatively, head to Mount Iō, a volcano that’s home to rare Siberian Dwarf Pine.
There are two caldera lakes on either side of Mount Iō, Lake Mashū and Lake Kussharo, the latter of which feeds into pampering hot springs. Wakoto Hot Spring has open-air baths, while Nibushi Hot Spring let you soak while admiring lake vistas.
Learn about the native history and culture at the Teshikagacho Kussharokotanainuminzoku Museum, which houses ancient tools, clothing and weaponry. You can also visit the Kawayu Shrine to admire old-world Japanese architecture.
Getting around Teshikaga
Teshikaga is just over one hour’s drive from Memanbetsu Airport and is connected to neighbouring cities and towns via train services from its Mashu Station. You can easily explore the centre of Teshikaga on foot, but it’s best to hire a vehicle to venture further afield.
