About Szentendre

Just up the Danube from the capital Budapest, Szentendre is one of Hungary’s many hidden gems. With an atmosphere more Mediterranean than Eastern European, this charmingly artsy town showcases stunning Baroque architecture and quintessentially Hungarian shopping.

Szentendre’s web of cobblestone streets hold many a Baroque façade. The Main Square features an ornate cross built in 1763, while its surrounding streets are lined with colourful merchant houses. Other architectural landmarks include the 1768 House of Prisoner Raby and the Greek-Orthodox Blagovestenska Church. Boutiques in the area sell typical souvenirs of the region such as pottery, embroidered clothes and linens and traditional Hungarian paprika. The city also has several museums, including the Open Air Village, the National Wine Museum and a range of art galleries.

Twenty-two kilometres north of Budapest, Szentendre is little more than a half hour drive from the Hungarian capital. The Batthyanyter station in Budapest serves both the capital’s Metro and the regional HEV commuter rail systems. A ride on the H5 line to Szentendre takes less than an hour.

Originally known as Ulcisia Castra, Szentendre has been settled since the days of the Roman Empire. So much of its architecture is Baroque in style because invading Mongols and Turks in the 13th and 15th centuries, respectively, destroyed the city.
