Travelling from the village of Llanberis to the highest peak in Wales, the Snowdon Mountain Railway takes you on a magnificent journey through Snowdonia National Park. Both steam and diesel locomotives are used to haul passenger cars to the 1,085-metre-high summit, passing plunging waterfalls and teetering along the edge of the Rocky Valley.
Enjoy the Heritage Steam Experience on the “Snowdon Lily” or “The Mountain Goat”, with all carriages accurate reconstructions of 1896 models. Alternatively, opt for the Traditional Diesel Service to the summit of Snowdon and visit the United Kingdom’s highest visitor centre at Hafod Eryri.
Soak up the magnificent views of the Eryri, the “Land of the Eagles”, which stretch all the way to Ireland on a clear day. The Snowdon Mountain Railway travels to the summit from May until the end of October and to the three-quarter mark at Clogwyn during March and April.
Getting there
Llanberis is in the far north-west of Wales where the waters of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris meet. There are flights to Cardiff from Anglesey Airport, while Liverpool John Lennon Airport is just under two hours’ drive east.
