About Sīrkāzhi

Sirkazhi is home to one of the most iconic Hindu pilgrimage sites in Southern India. The town is set on the Bay of Bengal and is dotted with temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tirugnanasambandar, a beloved Saiva saint, was also born in Sirkazhi in the 7th century.

Sattainathar Temple is the biggest and most impressive pilgrimage site, with parts of the ancient temple dating back to the 10th century. Stroll around the temple and marvel at its soaring “gopuram” towers and colourful paintings, as well as the intricate stone carvings depicting Hindu gods.

From street stalls selling chai tea and samosas to lively local restaurants, Sirkazhi is a fantastic place to experience life in a traditional South Indian village. In January, the village comes to life for the annual three-day Makara Pongal festival.

Getting there

Sirkazhi is located in the state of Tamil Nadu, a five-hour drive south of Chennai and Chennai International Airport. Local buses stop in the town centre, while taxis and auto-rickshaws are a quick and easy way to get around Sirkazhi.
