About Shuili Township

Located at the junction of the Shuili and Zhuoshui rivers, Shuili is a largely rural township in Nantou County. It comprises 19 villages, including the former logging settlement of Checheng, as well as several dams that play an important role in hydroelectricity generation. Home to a cultural park dedicated to ceramics, Shuili Township lies on the southern edge of Sun Moon Lake.

Things to do in Shuili Township

For insight into Shuili Township’s craftsmanship, visit the Shuili Snake Kiln Ceramics Cultural Park, which centres around a snake-shaped kiln built in 1927. Founded by ceramic artisan Jiang Song Lin, it was long used to produce a range of ceramics, such as jars. Browse the objects on display in the museum and see what’s happening in the ceramic workshop before relaxing with a drink at the on-site cafe.

Want to stretch your legs? Enjoy a stroll through the Xitou Nature Education Area, a former experimental bamboo forest that’s been transformed into a nature reserve. It is nestled in a valley framed by mountains and features a 180-metre-long skywalk that traverses its forest canopy. Soak up the views from the observatory before exploring the Ginkgo biloba garden.

Shuili Township makes an ideal base for exploring the sights of Sun Moon Lake, including the 12-floor, octagonal Ci En Pagoda. Admire the cascades of Xianxiang Falls or learn about the region’s indigenous peoples at the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. For elevated views across the forested lake, jump aboard one of the cable cars of the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway.
