About Perpignan

Set between the Pyrenees Mountains and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, Perpignan has a medieval Old Town, royal castles and freshly-caught Mediterranean seafood. Perpignan is also a great base for beach hopping along the sun-drenched Cote Vermeille coast.

Things to do in Perpignan

Perpignan is anchored by an atmospheric Old Town crisscrossed with cobblestone alleys and palm-shaded squares filled with brightly-painted buildings housing souvenir shops, cafes and bistros. The town is also just a stone's throw from the Spanish border, so you'll find plenty of tapas bars.

Built in 1276, the Palace of the Kings of Mallorca is an enormous star-shaped castle. Climb up to the ramparts for sweeping views over Perpignan’s terracotta Old Town and the Mediterranean coast.

The Musee de Préhistoire de Tautavel offers a fascinating glimpse at Perpignan's prehistoric past. It's filled with artefacts from the ancient caves that dot the Tautavel cliffs, including a human skull estimated to be over 450,000 years old.

Thanks to its coastal setting, Perpignan serves up some of France's best seafood. For an indulgent night out, book a table at Le St-Jean, an elegant restaurant serving up modern French fare. Meals are served in a cobbled courtyard shaded by dusty pink magnolias.

Getting around Perpignan

Perpignan is best explored on foot, within the Old Town. Bikes are also a great way to get around, with the city offering a great bike-share scheme. Flights land at Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport, five kilometres from the city centre.
