Packed full of energy, the bustling suburb of Paceville has become Malta’s entertainment hub. Pubs and bars line the streets, their terraces full of customers from the mid-afternoon onwards. Dozens of nightclubs stay open long past midnight while a concoction of cafes and restaurants line the waterfront, offering fabulous views towards St. George’s Bay and Spinola Bay. Located on the east of the island, just north of capital city Valletta, Paceville is where locals and tourists come to mingle and soak up the bohemian atmosphere.
Bars and restaurants can be found all over Paceville with the most upmarket located along the waters of Spinola Bay. There’s also a huge amount of international restaurants and pubs around Paceville Piazza, along with a beautiful collection of cafes along Triq Dragunara. Many of the smaller streets are dotted with smaller local establishments, popular with locals and visiting tourists.
Public bus services run along Triq Dragunara and connect Paceville with Valetta and other parts of eastern Malta. From the capital, it’s often quicker to take the express buses to St. Julian’s Terminus on the edge of Paceville and walk 15 minutes into the suburb’s centre. Most of the interior streets are fully pedestrianised, lined by the terraces and chairs of local cafes.
The houses in Paceville were occupied by British serviceman throughout the first half of the 20th century, providing the origins of the numerous British-style pubs found in the area. The suburb developed in the 1960s when five-star hotels were built on the peninsula.
