Sitting on the Canada-United States border, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a charming gateway to the world-famous Niagara Falls and the tranquil Lake Ontario. However, this dynamic town has its own alluring elements, from its well-preserved 19th-century buildings and world-class theatre to sprawling parklands and lakeside golf course.

Things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake transports you back to 19th-century Canada, thanks to its array of restored buildings within its historic Downtown neighbourhood. Stroll around the tree-lined streets past former military sites, such as Butler’s Barracks and Navy Hall, along with St Mark’s Church, McFarland House and the Old Court House Theatre. All these historic sites have helped Downtown become a National Historic Site of Canada.

Get an immersive taste of the town’s military past at the reconstructed Fort George, which showcases a day in the life of soldiers during the War of 1812. Tour several battlefields of this storied war while listening to tales told by infantry members in period uniforms. It’s a short stroll from The Commons, an expansive park with war monuments and summer music concerts.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is in the heart of Ontario’s wine-making country and is a short drive from notable wineries, including Pondview Estate Winery and Lailey Winery. Both offer outdoor dining, wine tastings and vineyard tours.

Don’t miss seeing the astounding Niagara Falls, which are only 30 minutes’ drive away. You can see the cascading falls on a boat tour or from one of the multiple lookouts. You can also chill out on Sunset Beach, a sandy stretch along Lake Ontario, or visit Happy Rolph's Animal Farm to see farm animals and explore nature trails.

Getting around Niagara-on-the-Lake

Niagara-on-the-Lake is serviced by public buses run by Niagara-on-the-Lake Transit, but it’s best to hire a car for more flexibility. It’s about 1.5 hours’ drive from Toronto Pearson International Airport and a one-hour drive from Buffalo Niagara International Airport in the United States.
