About Muzaffarabad

Muzaffarabad is a bustling city framed by snow-capped mountains and set at the junction of the Jhelum and Neelum rivers. The cool climate and beautiful alpine scenery make it popular with urbanites looking to escape the lowland heat and with travellers heading to Kashmir.

Things to do in Muzaffarabad

Pick up everything from intricately embroidered wool shawls to hand-stitched leather goods at the Muzaffarabad bazaar. Venture inside to discover a maze of pedestrian-only streets and alleys. Muzaffarabad is famous for beautifully carved wooden furniture and trinkets, which you’ll see sold across the city. Smaller items like jewellery boxes and ornaments make excellent souvenirs.

The Red Fort towers over a bend in the Neelam River. It was completed by Sultan Muzaffar Khan in the 17th century and recalls the grandeur of the Chak and Bomba dynasties. Wander around the ruins of the ancient stronghold, admire the ochre-coloured bricks and enjoy the uninterrupted views over the river and mountains. The grass-covered areas are great for picnics.

Small roadside restaurants called “dhabbas” dot the riverside. Sit down to enjoy deep-fried “qatlama” flatbread, spicy chicken curry and “bhalla” croquettes drizzled with yoghurt and chutney. Warm up with a cup of rose-tinted Kashmiri tea. A special brewing process gives the tea a unique pink colour.

Drive up to the 2,900-metre-high Pir Chinasi for breathtaking views over the surrounding mountains and valleys. You’ll find beautiful walks near Muzaffarabad, ranging from leisurely riverside strolls to challenging ridgetop trails.
