Where to stay in Matara

About Matara

Beautiful Dutch architecture and centuries-old fortresses stand side-by-side in Matara. The bustling city is perched on the south coast of Sri Lanka and showcases the country through a local lens. Easy access to palm-fringed beaches makes Matara a great base for sunseekers.

Things to do

Built by the Dutch in the 1700s, Star Fort welcomes visitors with a grand entrance flanked by a pair of carved stone lions. A small but engaging museum charts the history of Matara and offers a glimpse at the cells and sleeping quarters buried deep within the fort. Walk along the ramparts to check out the cannons and admire sweeping views over the city.

The t-shaped Old Dutch Trade Centre is another stunning example of Dutch architecture. Approaching the building, you’ll be impressed by the magnificent gabled entrance supported by soaring white columns. Stroll around the Matara Fort historic district to admire beautiful colonial mansions.

Protected by an offshore reef and fringed by swaying palms, Polhena Beach is perfect for a day of rest and relaxation. Sip a coconut on the sandy beach, cool off in the bay’s clear waters and watch for sea turtles cruising in the shallows. Golden sand and rolling waves make nearby Medawatta Beach popular with surfers.

Marooned on an island, Paravai Duwa Temple is a Buddhist temple linked to the mainland via a pedestrian bridge. You’ll often see saffron-robed monks crossing the bridge to meditate at the temple. At sunset, locals stroll along the beach and enjoy locally-made ice cream.

Getting around

Matara’s town centre is easy to get around on foot. Taxis and rickshaws are a quick and comfortable way to get around. Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo is a 2.5-hour drive north.
