Where to stay in Lào Cai

About Lào Cai

Ancient stone carvings, hill tribes, markets and mountains combine in Lao Cai, an untouched province in north-west Vietnam. Home to the towering peak of Fansipan, Lao Cai boasts spectacular views, cascading waterfalls and terraced rice paddies.

Things to do

Make the most of the fresh mountain air on a bicycle tour through Muong Hoa Valley, set in the heart of Sapa, which reveals rice terraces and lush rainforest. Admire the mysteriously engraved stones and stop by Lao Chai Village for a glimpse into the lives of the local H’mong people.

Visit Hoang Lien National Park and hike to Silver Waterfalls to see a series of cascading streams flowing down from Lo Sui Tong mountain. Travel along Heaven’s Gate, the highest stretch of road in Vietnam, where you can relish the park’s superb mountain scenery from above.

Take the Sun World Fansipan Legend cable car to Fansipan Mountain, the highest peak in Indochina. At 3,143 metres high, the views from the summit encompass the entire Muong Hoa Valley and Hoang Lien Mountain range. If you’re looking for a physical challenge, immerse yourself amongst nature on a three-day hike to the summit.

Find locally handcrafted souvenirs at Bac Ha Market, held every Sunday by the local tribe's people. Arrive early to experience the lively atmosphere of locals bartering, buying and selling and see exotically dressed H’mong people.

Getting around

Fly into Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and take a day or night train to Lao Cai. Buses run between Lao Cai and other cities within Vietnam and China. Rental cars and local buses are the best ways to get around Lao Cai, with regular bus routes to Sapa and Bac Ha Market.
