About Koufonisia

Located off the south-east coast of Naxos, Koufonissia is an island community in the Small Cyclades, a little-known archipelago in the Aegean Sea. It comprises three islands, two of which are uninhabited and all boasting spectacular coastlines marked by towering cliffs and secluded beaches.

Things to do in Koufonisia

Stroll the bougainvillea-fringed streets of Koufonissia’s main village, which is home to several restaurants and tavernas serving authentic Greek cuisine. You can take a dip from the sands of Ammos Beach, swim in the sparkling cove of Ludiko or follow the walking trail that leads to picture-perfect Platia Pounta.

On the north-east coast of Ano Koufonisi are the Ksylompatis Caves, two impressive geological formations that have been carved into a flat-topped peninsula. They lie just a stone’s throw from the crescent-shaped beach of Paralia Pori and are within walking distance of the secluded Gala Beach. A trail hugs the coast leading south from here, taking in the natural formations known as the Eye of the Devil and the Piscine Naturelle.

Neighbouring Ano Koufonisi is Kato Koufonisi, an uninhabited island that can be reached by boat and features several blissfully remote beaches. On its east coast stands the whitewashed chapel of Panagia, which was established in 1561. Coincide your visit with the religious festival that takes place here each August, which includes feasting and a boat race to Ano Koufonisi.

Getting around Koufonisia

Koufonissia is connected by regular ferries to the island of Naxos and Piraeus port in Athens. Buses travel around the main island of Ano Koufonisi in the summer months and mopeds are available for rent. Ano Koufonisi’s village is easy to explore on foot and boats connect to Kato Koufonisi.
