Things to do in Kalymnos

The lively capital of Pothia is a launchpad to the island. Stroll around the lively town centre, browse the colourful souvenir shops and stop for lunch at a waterfront seafood restaurant. Save your appetite for local specialties like octopus balls, salted mackerel, smoked tuna and sea urchin salad. You’ll also see spinialo on the menu, a traditional dish featuring sea squirts marinated in seawater.

The Nautical & Folklore Museum is one of the best cultural attractions in the city, perched on the waterfront and featuring excellent exhibits on the island’s sponge fishing heyday. Visit the Archaeological Museum to admire gleaming bronze statues, colourful glassware and gold jewellery. Some of the oldest artefacts date back to 5300 BC.

Kalymnos is a mecca for climbers, with enthusiasts from around the world flocking to conquer the sheer rock walls and rugged peaks. The mountains along the western flank of the island are particularly impressive, with challenging routes and spectacular views over the Aegean Sea.

While Kalymnos was once a sponge diving hub, today it’s one of the top scuba destinations in Greece. Ferries depart from the main terminal in Pothia and run to the Greek mainland. Kalymnos Airport is three kilometres from the Pothia town centre.
