About Kalajoki

Translating as “Fish River”, Kalajoki is a coastal town in Finland’s Northern Ostrobothnia region. It was first mentioned in the 16th century when it was an important market town and a trade hub for the local tar industry. Today, it’s the region’s sandy beaches, birdwatching and adventure pursuits that attract visitors.

Things to do in Kalajoki

In the summer months, you can explore Kalajoki’s beautiful beaches and woodlands on its nature trails or rent a bicycle to cycle the town’s network of duckboards. In the winter months, Kalajoki provides the setting for skiing and ice swimming.

Its information board and observation tower can be accessed along a short walking trail. Getting around Kalajoki

Kalajoki is around an hour’s drive from Kokkola and just under two hours from Oulu. Kokkola-Pietarsaari Airport is 1.5 hours away and has regular flights to Helsinki. Buses travel to Kalajoki and the town is compact enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the region.
