About Judenburg

Located on the River Mur, Judenburg is a historic town in the Austrian state of Styria. It was first mentioned in the 11th century, although archaeological findings suggest the area was settled as early as the Celtic kingdom of “Noricum”. By the 20th century, it had established itself as an Austro-Hungarian garrison town and a major producer of steel.

Things to do in Judenburg

Overlooking the main square is the Pfarrkirche Judenburg-St Nikolaus, which was originally constructed in the 15th century. It was redesigned in the early 20th century on the designs of Hans Pascher and features Tyrolean stained-glass windows depicting religious scenes. Admire the artwork that decorates the north galleries and the magnificent organ built by Matthäus Mauracher.

You can delve into the local history at the Stadtmuseum Judenberg, which details the people, events and industries that have shaped the town. It was founded in 1948 by Ernst Klepsch-Kirchner and has occupied its current building in the heart of Judenberg since 1990. On the ground floor is a panoramic model of the town, while the upper floors feature dioramas illustrating important moments from the past.

Auto enthusiasts can visit the Puch Museum Judenberg, which celebrates the rich history of the Puch brand. It boasts an impressive collection of vintage vehicles, including legendary motorcycles and four-wheeled classics that were manufactured nearby. Of particular note is the Haflinger, a lightweight four-wheel drive vehicle popular with off-road enthusiasts. Don’t miss the summertime Puch Parade, when around 200 vehicles tour the Murtal region.
