About Johannesburg Planetarium

Flashes of creativity and swathes of street art greet visitors to Johannesburg Inner City. Revived and revitalised in recent years, this funky central area is becoming one of the liveliest in Africa. Pop-up shops and restaurants fill old industrial buildings, trendy markets dot the Inner City, and neighbourhoods have become symbols of the new Rainbow Nation. Popular with locals and foreign visitors, Johannesburg Inner City is defined by its optimism and enthusiasm. After overcoming a spell of decline, it's becoming a celebration of everything that's good about South Africa.

Strangers become friends here, especially in the various markets and creative precincts. Arts on Main and Maboneng are two popular examples, situated in the east of Johannesburg Inner City. In the evenings, the lively focus often shifts towards Market Theatre and Braamfontein, two creative neighbourhoods that are also especially vibrant at the weekend. The west of Johannesburg Inner City has retained its old-world multiculturalism, and there are many Indian and Pakistani restaurants. Yeoville has a distinctive Francophone Central Africa atmosphere while the Ethiopian cafes along Delver Street sell great coffee. The area's most unmistakable landmark is the 270-metre Hillbrow Tower, a communication's mast that dominates the Inner City skyline.

Johannesburg Park Station can be found in the very centre of the Inner City. It's a hub for suburban rail services and local minivan taxis, as well as being the area's only station on the high-speed Gautrain. From here there are fast and regular trains to O. R. Tambo International Airport, Sandton and Pretoria. The routes of local shared taxis can be confusing to visitors but the locals are very helpful in pointing people in the right direction. Once in one of the precincts, the experience is all about exploring slowly on foot, popping into the quirky boutiques and creative bars.

Johannesburg Inner City fell into decline in the post-apartheid era when many of the major banks and businesses relocated to Sandton. The transformation over the last decade has been remarkable, with derelict precincts converted into the hip and happening destinations of South Africa.
