About Hoengseong

Famed for its unique breed of Korean cattle known as Hanu, Hoengseong is a rural region on the edge of mountainous Chiaksan National Park. It’s within easy access of the snowfields at Wellihilli and the buzzing streets of Wonju.

Things to do in Hoengseong

Stretch your legs along one of the hiking trails through Chiaksan National Park, which encompasses a number of soaring peaks to the south of Hoengseong. Explore the picturesque Geumdae Valley and photograph the Seryeom Falls or tackle the 14-kilometre-long trail that connects the peaks of Birobong and Namdaebong.

Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts can hit the slopes of the Wellihilli Snow Park, which boasts a state-of-the-art snow-making system. Get your thrills on the “Big Buster” bobsledding course and test your skills on the giant half-pipe, with kid-friendly snow tubes for younger guests.

Make a day trip to the modern city of Wonju, home to the 7th-century Guryongsa Temple where South Korea’s largest straw mat is preserved. The city also has the oldest bell in the country, with the ornate Bronze Bell of the Sangwonsa Temple cast in 725.

If you’re interested in the work of Japanese architect Tadao Ando, visit the Museum SAN, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Oak Valley. In addition to engaging pieces by contemporary Korean artists, it features striking sculptural gardens and an exhibition hall dedicated to the American artist, James Turrell.

Getting around Hoengseong

Hoengseong lies adjacent to Wonju, where trains make the 1.5-hour journey to Seoul and on to Incheon International Airport. Hoengseong is easily explored on foot and buses access most of the surrounding sights.
