Grazalema is an enchanting village set beneath towering limestone peaks. Explore a maze of cobbled streets lined with gleaming white houses, where colourful flowers spill over wrought-iron balconies and bright pink bougainvillea vines drape from the rooftops. All roads lead to Plaza de España, the lively main square. Cafes, bars and restaurants spill onto the cobbled square and add to the postcard-perfect setting.
The Church of La Aurora towers over the square and dates to the 18th century. You’ll also notice architectural gems like the Town Hall with its graceful arches and the Iglesia de la Encarnacion parish church. Iglesia de San José Carmelite convent is a short stroll away and is decorated with paintings.
The village is a gateway to Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Spend the day exploring the park and hiking in the rugged mountains. Some of the highest peaks soar 1,500 metres above sea level. They form a barrier to Atlantic clouds and create a unique microclimate with plenty of rainfall. Naturalists flock to the park to view rare “pinsapo” Spanish fir trees.
Getting there
Grazalema is in the province of Cádiz, a 1.5-hour drive from Seville and two hours from Málaga. The village is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Seville Airport is a two-hour drive away.
