Nestled in the foothills of the Vaucluse Mountains, Gordes is a hilltop town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France. It’s considered one of the most beautiful towns in the country, with narrow cobblestone streets, white stone houses and centuries-old castles and churches among its attractions.
Dominating the town is the Château de Gordes, an 11th-century castle remodelled during the Renaissance. It’s renowned for its monumental fireplace within the Hall of Honour, which has been designated as a Monument Historique. The castle also houses a museum dedicated to the life and work of the Flemish-born artist Pol Mora, with around 200 of his works exhibited across its three floors.
A short stroll from the Château de Gordes is Les Caves du Palais Saint-Firmin, a series of underground dwellings, cisterns and olive oil mills that were developed during the Middle Ages. Watch the short documentary about the restoration of the cellars and the 3D video illustrating its artisanal activities, then see this underground world with your own eyes.
One of Gordes’ most impressive churches is the Eglise Saint-Firmin, which was built in the 18th century and dedicated to the town’s patron saint. It enjoys a commanding setting overlooking Gordes and encompasses beautiful wood panelling and colourful murals within its interior. Also not to miss is the Chapelle Des Pénitents Blancs, a charming chapel that has existed since at least 1667.
Gordes is a 45-minute drive from Avignon and 30 minutes from Avignon – Provence Airport while the much-larger Marseille Provence Airport is just over an hour away. Regular buses connect to Gordes from destinations across Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and the town is compact enough to explore on foot.
Gordes is home to many highly-rated hotels, one of which is Mas des Romarins, The Originals Relais (Relais du Silence), which has a current rating of 8.1. For other potential stays, consider Hotel Les Bories & Spa and Le Phebus & Spa, which can also be great places to stay in Gordes.
